The Pharmacy SIG was formed in early 1998 with the aim of meeting their specific training needs as part of the ICR's programme of meetings and training courses.

The ICR Pharmacy SIG is made up of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

A Pharmacist is an expert on the use of medicines who provides advice and guidance on all aspects of medicines management. All practising pharmacists must be registered with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. To register a pharmacist must have a degree in pharmacy, have completed 52 weeks hospital, community or industry based practical training (of which at least 26 weeks must have been in a hospital or community pharmacy) and passed the registration exam.

Many hospital pharmacists specialise in an area of practice such as clinical practice, radiopharmacy and aseptic services, production and quality assurance, risk management, education and training, clinical trials or medicines information.

A Pharmacy Technician is a person who holds a Pharmacy Services NVQ3 qualification, a BTEC in pharmaceutical sciences or equivalent.

Technicians are experts in medicines preparation, dispensing, procurement and stock control. Many now have specialist or extended roles including manufacturing, clinical trials, medicines information, ward based activities and management.
