Conference Overview

Responding to feedback

In a recent member survey “keeping up to date with industry updates and news” was one of the top three benefits of ICR membership. Some of this information is essential, such as the impact of regulatory changes, while other “hot topics” are subject to more debate; hence this years conference title “Essential Updates & Lively Debates”.

Each day, the conference will open and close with question-and-debate sessions covering controversial topics headed by the chief executive of Kings Fund, Niall Dickson, and author and broadcaster Martin Ince. There are chaired debates throughout the conference programme so that your questions and opinions can be aired.

We have also introduced half-day passes for the first time this year, in an effort to make it accessible to more members in these challenging economic times. All conference sessions will be eligible for CPD points and certificates will be forwarded on request after the event.

Streams and Speaker Highlights

There are four streams covering Therapeutics, Raising Standards, Sharing Knowledge and Developing Professionals. This means there are subjects of interest for delegates whether they are just starting out in the profession, or have been in the industry for years and are addressing some of the challenges facing the industry today.

Mama Mia!

We are holding a drinks reception on the Monday evening before the event begins and to celebrate the ICR’s 30th birthday we are having a 1978-themed gala dinner and fancy dress party on the Tuesday night, an ABBA tribute band will be performing which should be great fun!

Therapeutics

There will be three half-day therapeutics sessions. Leading the Oncology session is Professor Karol Sikora, professor of cancer medicine at Imperial College London, alongside four other cancer specialists. We have Prof James Neuberger leading the session on “Organ Transplantation, Past, Present & Future”, and Prof Avijit Lahiri  heads the “Heart of Cardiology” session.

Raising Standards

This stream is all about regulations, processes, quality and inspections.  Dr Eva Bagenholm, chairperson of the WMA’s Medical Ethics Committee and president of the Swedish Medical Association, will focus on the Declaration of Helsinki, with additional presentations covering such topics as inspections, and putting a price on patient value.

Sharing Knowledge

This stream covers new ideas on how and where studies are performed, and how new technology is impacting upon clinical research. Klaus Rose will be speaking about PIPs, and David Jefferys and Paul Wathall will debate the pros and cons of off-shoring. Professor Malcolm Alison will tackle the current controversies with Stem Cell Research. Also addressed in this stream are EDC and adaptive study design.

Developing Professionals

In response to member feedback there will be a “GCP question time” session on each day, chaired by David Talbot who is chair of the ICR GCP forum. Job-specific workshops on topics such as project management and medical devices are designed to give delegates information and skills they can take back to the workplace.

The conference will close with a forward-looking presentation from Kate Moss of PricewaterhouseCoopers entitled:

Pharma 2020: Virtual R&D - Which path will you take?
